Healthy skin begins with one essential step: cleansing. Yet it is also the step most often done wrong. Let’s talk about cleansing mistakes that age skin.

Whether it comes from lack of time, exhaustion, or simply habit, many skincare mistakes happen automatically. But what goes onto the skin must come off — and the way you remove it matters. The right cleansing ritual protects your skin barrier, keeps the complexion balanced, and preserves its natural glow.

Cleansing your skin every day is not optional. Throughout the day, skin is exposed to pollution, excess oil, dirt, sweat, temperature changes, and makeup. Skipping this step allows oils and dead skin cells to build up on both the skin and pillowcase, eventually leading to clogged pores, inflammation, breakouts, and hyperpigmentation.

The method matters just as much as the product.

The Most Common Cleansing Mistakes that Age Skin

  • Washing with water that is too hot
  • Cleansing the skin with a towel
  • Using the wrong cleanser
  • Sleeping with makeup on
  • Skipping SPF protection

Stop Using a Towel on Your Face

Towels are not skincare — they are friction. Rubbing the skin with fabric can weaken the barrier, increase sensitivity, and contribute to irritation over time. Instead, choose gentle cotton pads or a nourishing cleanser applied with clean hands.

“Never cleanse your face with a towel,” says Lucija Kračun, MD. “It disrupts the skin barrier.”

The same applies when removing makeup. Many people still rely on harsh rubbing or aggressive wiping, but skin should never be treated roughly. Care for the skin by nourishing it, not stripping it.

Makeup Wipes or Cleanser?

Makeup wipes may seem convenient, but they are often not enough. Instead of properly removing makeup, oil, and dirt, they frequently smear debris across the skin, leaving behind residue that can clog pores and compromise the skin barrier.

A proper cleanser works differently. It dissolves impurities while respecting the skin’s natural balance, leaving the complexion clean, calm, and hydrated.

Avoid Hot Water

Hot water may feel comforting, but it can be extremely damaging to the skin.

“Hot temperatures strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and more sensitive,” explains facialist Elina Lei. Excessive heat can also dilate capillaries, increase redness, and contribute to rosacea and broken blood vessels over time.

Lukewarm water is always the better choice. Gentle cleansing protects the skin barrier instead of weakening it.

SPF Is Non-Negotiable

Everything you do for your skin becomes less effective if you are not wearing sunscreen.

UV exposure is one of the leading causes of premature aging, hyperpigmentation, dehydration, and loss of elasticity. It also significantly increases the risk of skin cancer. Even though SPF is one of the most repeated skincare recommendations, it remains one of the most ignored.

The sun does not wait. Protect your skin before damage appears, not after.

5 Signs You’re Using the Wrong Cleanser

1. Your Skin Feels Tight After Washing

If your skin feels dry, tight, or “squeaky clean,” your cleanser is likely too harsh and damaging the barrier.

2. Increased Redness or Sensitivity

Irritated, sore, or overheated skin is often a sign that cleansing products are stripping the skin.

3. Sudden Breakouts

Using formulas not suited to your skin type can lead to congestion, inflammation, and acne.

4. Rough Texture

A damaged skin barrier often results in uneven texture and dry patches.

5. Dullness

Over-cleansing removes essential lipids, leaving the complexion tired, dehydrated, and lacking radiance.

Beautiful skin is not created through aggressive routines. It comes from consistency, balance, and protection.

Shake off damaging skincare habits. Your skin barrier will thank you for it.
